Solid Foam vs. Filled Cushions – Understanding the Difference
The key difference between solid foam cushions and filled cushions lies in their structure, support, and feel:
  • Solid Foam Cushions – Made from a single block of foam, these cushions provide firm, structured support and maintain their shape over time. They are ideal for seat cushions and high-use furniture where durability and resilience are essential.
  • Filled Cushions – Filled with materials like ball fibre, feather, or down, these cushions offer a soft, plush feel with a more relaxed and inviting appearance. They require occasional fluffing to maintain their shape and are commonly used for back cushions, scatter cushions, and decorative pillows.
Both cushion types serve different purposes, and selecting the right option depends on comfort preferences, furniture style, and usage requirements.

Solid Foam Cushions: Understanding Density

A solid foam cushion that is comfortable for one person can feel completely differently to another person. There is also a big difference in the density and quality of different foam cushions, which determine how comfortable and durable the cushion will be. Many cheap foam cushions may feel firm or comfortable at first, but after very little use, they collapse and are no longer supportive. For this reason it is extremely important to be aware of the density and grade of the foam that is used. The 2 most important factors to consider when choosing the foam material for your cushion foam: Density and firmness. Here's the difference:

(Solid Foam) - Density: Foam’s density refers to how much it weighs per cubic meter. Higher density foam grades have more foam per cubic meter, where as lower density foams have less foam and more air bubbles. When you buy a higher density foam grade, it will be more expensive because you are literally getting more foam for your money. Having a higher density also means the foam will keep its shape, structure and firm feel for longer. The higher the density the more durable the foam, but not necessarily harder....

(Solid Foam) - Firmness: The hardness of the foam is a measure of the feel of the foam. This is measured in Newtons (for the detailed minded). The firmness of a cushion is often a matter of preference rather than quality. The harder the foam is the firmer it will feel. However just because a foam feels firm, doesn’t mean it is high density or that it will continue feeling firm after prolonged usage. Some of the cushions we make are extremely soft but of very high density.

Practical Application:

For seat cushions we normally use high density foam with a medium firmness so the seat is durable, supportive and also comfortable. Our high density foam carry a 2-year warranty. We also make filled seat cushions but these require constant 'fluffing' to re-shape the cushions, therefor we prefer using solid foam in our seat cushions.

In the case of back cushions there are 2 types: solid foam cushions and filled / stuffed back cushions. For back cushions we generally prefer filling as its more comfortable but it's also dependent on the shape and design of the cushion in relation to the design of the sofa or chair. When using solid foam for back cushions we always use medium density - soft.

Cushion Refilling for the Hospitality Industry: Enhance Comfort & Save Costs

In the hospitality industry, guest comfort is paramount, and worn-out cushions can negatively impact their experience. Instead of replacing entire seating units, cushion refilling offers a cost-effective way to rejuvenate furniture, ensuring maximum comfort while extending its lifespan.

Cost-Effective Solution

High-quality furniture is a significant investment for hotels, lodges, and guesthouses. Over time, cushions lose their shape and support, leading to discomfort and a tired appearance. Refilling cushions with premium foam or padding is a fraction of the cost of replacing furniture, helping businesses maintain their luxury standards while keeping budgets in check

.

Enhanced Guest Experience

Guests expect plush, supportive seating in lobbies, restaurants, lounges, and rooms. Flat, sagging cushions create a negative impression, while refreshed cushions enhance relaxation and reinforce a sense of luxury. Whether it’s a hotel suite’s cozy armchair or a game lodge’s outdoor lounge seating, well-maintained cushions contribute to a superior guest experience.

Sustainability & Durability

Many hospitality brands are embracing sustainable practices, and cushion refilling aligns perfectly with this approach. Instead of discarding furniture, upgrading the foam or padding reduces waste and supports eco-conscious operations. Additionally, choosing high-density, durable foams extends the usability of seating, ensuring long-term value.

Tailored Comfort for Every Setting

From ultra-soft lounge cushions to firm restaurant seating, cushion refilling allows for customization based on specific guest needs. Foam density, thickness, and fabric reinforcements can be tailored to match high-traffic or luxury settings, ensuring every seating area remains inviting and stylish.

By opting for professional cushion refilling, hospitality businesses can prolong their furniture investments, maintain a high standard of comfort, and deliver an exceptional guest experience—all while keeping costs under control.
